In 2010, a proposal was submitted to the EU Energy Facility for establishing 50 multifunctional ICT centres based on solar energy in The Gambia, Zambia and Tanzania under the flag of NICE International. For the twenty NICE Centres planned in Tanzania, Viafrica Tanzania is the local partner. Meanwhile the proposal has been approved and the preparations are in full swing.
NICE and Viafrica will jointly establish NICE Centres, based on the successful model NICE has started in The Gambia. Local entrepreneurs run a NICE Centre as a 'supermarket' for development services. The centres provide access to internet, offer energy services such as charging mobile phones, have a cinema which can be used for giving information, but also for watching soccer matches, and host training courses. Viafrica will support its social 'ICT for education' programmes from the centres as well as offering its commercial ICT services. Next to these existing services of both organisations new services will be jointly developed.
At the end of October, Joost Dam has visited Tanzania with Ties Kroezen, director of NICE International, to take the first steps. Potential locations have been visited, staff was hired and talks were held with interesting partners for supplying the new services. The planning is that within 3 months the first NICE Centre will open its doors in Moshi.
